Ukrainian and European gas market Navigator (April 2024)

07/05/24

The Association of Gas Producers of Ukraine presents the current information on the Ukrainian and European gas markets.

1en

The average spot price was 29.133 EUR/MWh ($332, or UAH 13 049 per thcm).

The average futures price at the TTF hub (Month-Ahead), excluding the last day, was 28.975 EUR/MWh ($330, or UAH 12 979 per thcm).

The difference in gas price between the spot and future markets was 0.5%. Increases of 8.9% and 7.8% were recorded.

2en

Over the month, 140.3 million cm of gas were sold on the exchange at an average weighted price of UAH 12 117 per thcm (excluding VAT, on all payment terms, in the GTS and UGS). 66% was purchased in the GTS, and 34% in the UGS.

From April 1, activity in the market for short-term standardized products increased - 1.24 million cm of gas were sold and purchased, which is 17.7 times more compared to March.

Over the last 16 months, 1.742 bcm have been successfully sold on the UEEX (excluding GMU).

3en

The high fill levels of European UGS are stabilizing the markets and bringing prices back to pre-war levels. April 2024 results exceeded last year’s by 2.5%.

At the same time, over the past few months, Ukraine’s UGS has been repeatedly attacked by Russia. Despite this, they continue to operate stably.

Ukraine is calling on the EU to help protect the gas storages, as they are integrated into Europe’s energy system, actively used by non-residents, and contribute to the continent’s energy security.

4en

Since the beginning of the month, 60.6 million cm of gas has been transported to Ukraine, which is almost 2.5 times less than in March. All the resource came from Hungary.

The total reserved volume that Russia may not supply, but for which it must pay according to the contract, is almost 8.2 bcm over four months.

In April, Gazprom transported 1.27 bcm, or 39% of the contracted volume. This is 6% more than last year, but 44% less than in 2022 and 66% less compared to the same period in 2021.
